If you saw someone riding the Green Line with a giant sword or full suit of armor, that was perfectly normal. They were probably heading to the Hynes Convention for Anime Boston 2016.
Now in its 13th year, Anime Boston is New England's largest anime convention, celebration japanese animation, comics and pop culture. The event has grown from an attendance of 4,110 in 2003 to 27,150 event-goers last year.
This year's event, which took place Friday, March 25 to Sunday March 27 attracted thousands of anime enthusiasts, many of which took the opportunity to cosplay as some of their favorite characters from across the anime, comic and video game spectrum.
Security getting into the Hynes was noticeably tighter this year, leading to odd occurrences like watching a refrigerator-sized Gameboy walk through a metal detector, an otherwise innocent-looking schoolgirl getting a eight-foot scythe inspected by security. (Don't worry, it -- like all other cosplay accessories -- are custom made from safe materials).
