The Kyoto International Manga Anime Fair (KYOMAF), one of the largest of its kind in the Kansai region, will be held for a fifth time on Sept. 17 and 18.
KYOMAF will take place at the Miyakomesse convention center and the Kyoto International Manga Museum, where the festival was held last year.
But this year, the Rohm Theater Kyoto, which houses the 2,000-seat Main Hall, has been added as a venue for the festival. Related events will also be offered in the Okazaki area in the ancient capital’s Sakyo Ward.
The KYOMAF executive committee aims to attract 40,000 paying visitors for the two-day festival held at the three venues. Last year, KYOMAF attracted 36,951 attendees.
“KYOMAF has steadily made progress year by year,” Kyoto Mayor Daisaku Kadokawa said at a news conference in mid-April.
The mayor also revealed that the winner of the 2015 KYOMAF Manga Award, covering aspiring manga artists living in Taiwan, will soon debut in a Japanese comic anthology.
In addition, Kadokawa mentioned an Agency for Cultural Affairs event involving Japan, China and South Korea that will be held in Kyoto in 2017.
“We will promote anime and manga to the world,” the mayor said enthusiastically.
Takayuki Matsutani, head of the KYOMAF executive committee, emphasized that editors working for manga publishers in Tokyo will join the festival again this year to evaluate the works of young artists in the Kansai region and help them start their professional careers.
The Rohm Theater Kyoto will host events on both days. No events have been finalized for Sept. 17, but a concert featuring the “Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride” symphony with composer Koichi Sugiyama will be performed the following day.
A cosplay area and various events for families and industry professionals will also be offered from this year.
