A new film in the long-running “Space Battleship Yamato” series is in the works, with Nobuyoshi Habara serving as director.
Habara, who helmed the Director’s Cut edition of the “Space Battleship Yamato: Resurrection” film, was among the staff members listed so far on the official website for “Space Battleship Yamato 2202: Ai no Senshi-tachi” (warriors of love).
Harutoshi Fukui, author of the original novel for the “Mobile Suit Gundam UC” robot anime series and whose past works include “Aegis” and “Lorelei: The Witch of the Pacific Ocean,” is writing and overseeing the scripts for the series.
In addition, Shoji Nishizaki, whose late father, Yoshinobu, was the creator of the original 1974 TV series, is credited as executive producer.
No other details have been released.
The numbers “2202” indicate that the new work is a direct sequel to the “Space Battleship Yamato 2199” series, which had run under the direction of Yutaka Izubuchi since 2012.
The original “Space Battleship Yamato” animated TV show, also known as “Star Blazers,” started its run in 1974 and eventually sparked a nationwide boom.
The series was re-edited into a feature film in 1977, but it was the 1978 film, “Farewell to Space Battleship Yamato,” that made the franchise wildly popular in Japan before spawning many sequels, TV specials and other works.
The franchise has seen a resurgence in popularity since the turn of the 2010s.
Following “Space Battleship Yamato: Resurrection” released in December 2009, a live-action feature film adaptation titled “Space Battleship Yamato,” directed by Takashi Yamazaki and starring Takuya Kimura, became a hit.
In 2012, the seven-chapter “Space Battleship Yamato 2199” film series started its run. In 2014, a compilation film called “Space Battleship Yamato 2199: A Voyage to Remember” and an all-new movie, “Space Battleship Yamato 2199: Odyssey of the Celestial Ark,” were released.
