500 Japanese fans weigh on which female artists publishing under male pseudonyms surprised them the most
Women artists using male pseudonyms is a practice that's been around for centuries, but even in the present day, fans are often still surprised when they learn that their favorite artists are employing this technique.
A recent flash poll on Goo Rankings quizzed 500 Japanese manga fans on which manga artists they were most surprised to learn were women using a male pen name. The top 4 results were:
4.) Mitsurō Kubo (Moteki, Again!) with 7.9% of the votes.
3.) Tsukasa Ōshima (Shoot!) with 9.3% of the votes.
2.) Hiromu Arakawa (Fullmetal Alchemist, Silver Spoon) with 13.4% of the votes.
1.) Fumiya Satō (Kinda'ichi Case Files, Detective School Q) with 29.2% of the votes.
The flash poll ran from September 11 - September 12, 2015, with the results only published on April 11, 2016. The 500 respondents included both men and women ages 20 to 30.
